Community Certification
Duke University EMS is an American Heart Association-certified Training Site at the Basic Life Support Level. We offer certifying classes in CPR/AED and First Aid for non-medical personnel as well as medical personnel. We also offer shorter, non-certifying courses in CPR/First Aid for those who are interested in the skills but do not have the time, money, or need for full certification. In order to streamline the process of registering your group for a class, please read the course descriptions below to ensure that you sign up for the course that best suits your needs.
After reading the course descriptions below, please fill out the TRAINING REQUEST FORM and email it to our Outreach Officer at duemsoutreach@duke.edu so that we can get you scheduled!
You can pay in cash or check (made out to Duke University with Duke University EMS in the memo line) at the start of class.
CPR & First Aid Class Offerings
Heartsaver CPR AED - $50.00 ($40.00 For Duke UNDERGRADUATEs)*
FOR GROUPS OF LESS THAN 5: We will have “open class” days that you can sign up for on the Google Calendar below.
FOR GROUPS OF 5 OR MORE: You can request a date of your choosing on the training request form and we will do our best to accomodate you. Please register with at least two weeks advance notice.
This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory or other requirements. (teachers, baby sitters, counselors)
Adult CPR and AED use
Optional: Child and Infant CPR, AED and Choking modules
Length: 3 hours
Skills Test
Upon completion, you will receive a Heartsaver CPR AED E-Card (2 years)
BLS for Healthcare Providers - $50.00 ($40.00 for Duke UNDERGRADUAtes)*
FOR GROUPS OF LESS THAN 5: Please reach out to the Outreach officer and we will do our best to accommodate you, especially if you need it by a certain deadline for a job.
FOR GROUPS OF 5 OR MORE: You can request a date of your choosing on the training request form and we will do our best to accommodate you. Please register with at least two weeks’ advance notice.
This course is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. (EMTs, firefighters, lifeguards)
The American Heart Association Chain of Survival
1-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child, and infant.
2-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child, and infant.
Bag-mask techniques for adult, child, and infant.
Foreign-body airway obstruction
Length: 4.5 hours
Tests: Written Exam, Skills Test
Upon completion, you will receive a BLS for Healthcare Providers E-Card (2 years)
Heartsaver First Aid - $50.00 ($40.00 For Duke UNDERGRADUATEs)*
ONLY AVAILABLE FOR GROUPS OF 5 OR MORE (due to time and equipment required): Please register with at least two weeks advance notice. Please note that training requested to be held off campus will induce a variable cost associated with travel. Duke University EMS reserves the right to decide the variable cost.
